Thousands fleeing the city of Galveston became stranded in their cars which ran out of petrol in 100-degree heat as they waited for authorities to bring them more fuel.

One woman said she had driven just 45 miles in 12 hours.

Houston's two airports have been crammed with people trying to evacuate the city. The chaos was exacerbated because many airport staff failed to show up for work.
